Traffic engineering studies are elaborate and meticulous investigations undertaken to determine the characteristics of the highway system, road users and their vehicles in a particular area, to monitor system operations, to identify problem areas, and to assist in developing appropriate remedial actions. The initiation of traffic studies can be requested by a public official, local resident, or a jurisdictional staff member.
